All About The Marquette Arts and Culture Center

You may have heard about The Marquette Arts and Culture Center, but do you know about all of the awesome things they've been doing for our community? We'll give you a little bit of background on the organization, and let you know about the events happening this fall!

What does the MACC do?

So many things! They run workshops, host art exhibitions, help with community art projects, put on performance events, provide meeting spaces for arts organizations, put together an arts calendar, and coordinate local heritage festivals. That's a lot for one organization, which is why we're so lucky to have a group like this in Marquette!

How long have they been around?

The division was organized in 1992, and moved to its current home in the Peter White Public Library in 2000. According to their website, they have an average of 263 visitors per day, and provide services to more than 300 local artists and organizations!

What are some of their upcoming events?

Marquette Spectacle

Previously known as the Halloween Spectacle, this community event has gotten a makeover in the past few years. They moved up the date (this year it will be held on October 12) to ensure some milder weather. There's a parade that anyone in the community can sign up to take part in, followed by art performances in Harlow Park. There will be music, performances, art installations, and food trucks. It's a great way to check out local art, and learn a little bit about Marquette's heritage.

Holiday Art Sale

On November 16, 2019 the organization will be hosting their 20th annual art sale at the Marquette Regional History Center. It is a juried event, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the MRHC. This is an awesome opportunity to support the local organization, who are one of our fundraiser partners. You can check out our fundraiser pendant collaboration here.

New Mural

You may have noticed that local artists have been working on a new mural at the corner of Third and Ohio Streets. This mural is a part of Iron Mountain native Mia Tavonatti's Power of Words Project. This is the ninth installation in the Upper Peninsula. Residents were able to vote on the words used in the project earlier this year, and chose the word 'Natural' to inspire the mural and describe the community. The unveiling is expected next summer.

Annual Art Awards

Currently, the center is accepting nominations for their annual community art awards. Nominations are being accepted through November 29, so if you know a deserving artist you can check out the criteria and nomination form here.

Community Events

A list of community workshops for the month of September can be found here.

We hope that you'll check out some of the amazing things the MACC is doing in the community this fall. Make sure to head down to their space in the Peter White, and we hope we'll see you at Marquette Spectacle on October 12!
